5 Secrets to Finding Happiness

August 18, 2016

Happiness can be elusive. We often think certain things will make us happy; that car, that job, that partner. But, if happiness is found outside us can we ever be truly happy within ourselves?

If happiness came from within, not from possessions or the actions of others, how would this be achieved? Would it be more stable and sustainable than looking for it in other places?

Here are my Top 5 Secrets to Finding Happiness

1/ Know what you want. This might seem obvious, but as we get older we often get less clear on what we want and focus more on what we don’t have. Yes there might be barriers; the mortgage must get paid, the kids must be looked after, your boss might notice if you stop going to work. But within all of this what is important to you, what impact would it have if you achieved it and how might it fit with your life now? Once you shift your focus from what you can’t have to what you want, possibilities start to appear and life feels happier.

2/ Be present. Now this might sound strange after point one, and I don’t mean in a really Zen way. But spending more time thinking about our current experience can help with our happiness levels. If you spend less time thinking about the past or worrying about the future, then more of your effort and focus can go into appreciating the current moment. Plan how you want things to be then spend your time enjoying every moment of it.

3/ Be brave. You might have heard this, but people who are coming to the end of their days don’t talk about the things they regretting doing, they regret the things they didn’t do. Fear, consequences, time, others expectations, there are lots of reasons why we don’t do things. But if we more frequently put the barriers to one side and took action, we may have less to regret later and more to celebrate now.

4/ Choose your friends wisely. Research suggests that we are most like the five people we spend the most time with. Emotion is catching and if you spend time with negative, inactive or critical people don’t be surprised if you become one. Seek out and spend time with the kind of people you want to be like, and it shall be so.

5/ Be your biggest fan. A little cheesy I agree, but often we are our harshest critic. If we said to others some of the negative, critical and down right unpleasant things that we often say to ourselves, we would not think ourselves a very nice person. The more positive and supportive you can be to yourself about yourself, the happier you will feel.
